Serum Institute of India Ltd. has now established itself as the World's largest manufacturer of Measles and DTP group of vaccines. It was founded in 1966 by Dr.Cyrus Poonawalla, Chairman & Managing Director, Mr.Zavaray Poonawalla, Joint Managing Director, and Late Dr.Jal Mehta (Padmabhushan), Vice President, with the aim of manufacturing life-saving immuno-biologicals, which were in shortage in the country and imported at high prices. The products being manufactured by SERUM INSTITUTE are DTP (Diphtheria, Tetanus & Pertussis) group of vaccines, MMR (Measles, Mumps & Rubella) group of vaccines, BCG, Rabies. Serum Institute is also manufacturing recombinant and combination vaccines such as recombinant Hepatitis B Vaccine & Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis + Hepatitis B Vaccine. Most of these vaccines are pre-qualified by World Health Organization/Switzerland for supply to United Nation Agencies such as UNICEF, PAHO etc, and its facilities conform to WHO CGMP requirements. SERUM INSTITUTE is also producing anti-sera e.g. Polyvalent Anti-Snake Venom Serum, Histaglobulin and Somatostatin Inj. SERUM INSTITUTE has a wide range of anti-cancer drugs like Doxorubicin Hydrochloride Inj, Cisplatin Inj., Vincristine Sulphate Inj, Etoposide Inj, Carboplatin for Inj, Dacarbazine for Inj. etc.

Serum Institute is actively associated with world renowned institutions like RIVM/NVI, The Netherlands, NIBSC/Uk, WHO/Switzerland, EDQM/France, PATH-MVP/France, CBER/USFDA/NIH/CDC, Gates Foundation, AERAS etc. in New Vaccines Projects, developing international reference standards, collaborative studies for modifying vaccine testing parameters, developing alternative for reduction in the use of animals in quality control tests, etc.

Serum's Scientists are frequently appointed/ nominated on various international conferences/workshops/programmes as WHO Advisers.

Serum Institute of India is closely associated with Serum Institute of India Research Foundation, an autonomous body, which is recognized by ICMR and Dept. of Science & Technology/Govt. of India. At Serum Institute of India Research Foundation, various new vaccines are in the developing stage such as Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine, Rota-Virus Vaccine, Hepatitis A, and Meningococcal ACYW135 Polysaccharide Vaccine.
